Connecting Aging People and Aging Places
This website (www.agingpeopleagingplaces.com) documents the struggles and joys of aging in neighbourhood across Canada and Indigenous communities through poetry, reflections, art, photos, videos and more! We are currently recruiting for this project.
Our vision is to examine local experiences of aging in cities and in communities to better understand how to improve conditions for aging in place. We ask older adults to submit reflections, poetry, photography and videos, to recipes, audio clips, narratives, and artwork to platform the joys, struggles and everyday lives of older adults and create a repository of stories about getting older in Canada and Indigenous communities. Aging People, Aging Places brings together academic research, practitioner reflections and personal narratives from older adults across Canadian and Indigenous communities to examine the local implications of aging in cities and communities.
We also hold workshops with groups of older adults to reach specific groups. Most recently, a researcher in our lab held a workshop with older adults from the 2SLGBTQI+ community, to understand a uniquely queer understanding of place. Inspired by the history of 2SLGBTQI+ adults gathering on the steps of the Second Cup in the Church-Wellesley Village, Meet Us At The Steps is a workshop designed to help gather the stories and perspectives of the older adults in this community.
